“Everyone was so excited about it,” she says of the institute’s launch in January 2020. She committed to remaining at home here in Portland and applying to enter the inaugural class of graduate students at the Roux Institute. When those West Coast opportunities were frozen by the pandemic, Heald did an about-face. ![]() Originally, her idea in March 2020 had been to make a life-changing move to California’s Bay Area, where she could count on the support of a network of friends as she pursued jobs with nonprofit organizations. None of this appeared to be in her future prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. ![]() She is three months into her full-time job as data manager for Portland Public Schools while continuing her year-long assignment as student ambassador for the Roux Institute at Northeastern University.
